The Bluegrass Bats defended their title at Lax-N-ati and earned a bit for the second straight year to the Dick's National Championship in Tampa. The Bats defeated Velocity in the Championship game 5-4 in an exciting matchup. Velocity had defeated the Bats earlier in a tug of war game 6-4. Excellent team play found the Bats easily defeating Indy Elite I and Indy Elite II on the first day of play. Team Indiana and Tribe were overmatched by the Bats who were able to score at will. Coach Schroeder was quite pleased with the team play of the Bats.
Bats Battled at Rutgers.
Bats were able to showcase at Rutgers in front of dozens of college coaches.
Great Bat Cheer for Aaron Benz. He is making a tremendous impact at Eastern University. He is starting in goal and has a 59% save percentage. Bats are proud of him.
Congratulations to the Bats that made the Adidas All American Team. These players will compete July 5-8 in Maryland. Those Bats making the team this year are: Cole Killion (D); Christian Poppe (D); Austin Fackler (D); Bobby Schmitt (D); Matt Herner (M) and Ryan Scinta (M).
The Fall Bats competed well in the Dicks Elite High School Championship, ending up rated 220th in the nation. Going into the tournament, they knew they faced the toughest competition in the nation. After first day's play they wound up seeded 19th in the tournament. Struggling through a cold and wet Tampa storm, the Bats played tough against FCA Maryland, Edge Jr.Elite, Krunch, and Steel City Select. The team struggled with controlling the ball and a broken thumb by Batcager Sears made it an especially difficult task. Batcager Crawford stepped in and played well. During the first day of games, the Bats played strong first halves, guided by Woomer, Karman, Kelly, Sims, Wesley, and Worthington. The Bats fought hard but ended up in the Consolation bracket. Although ending up 3rd seed in the Consolation Bracket, they found themselves in a battle against the Tampa Fire. An exciting finish, the Bats were down a goal with 9 seconds left on the clock. The Bat coaches called time out to set up the final play in regulation. Setting attackman Kelly in front of the cage, the Bats won the face and raced toward the cage. A shifty dodge and no look pass to an open Sam Woomer, Sam, giving a head fake , the defender spun into the ground and with 3 seconds Sam's twenty foot shot bounced into the goal to tie it. With 3 seconds left, the Fire team won the face and made a dramatic long shot toward goal that was artfully snagged by Batcager Crawford. Going into overtime, the both the Bats and Fireman team struggled to find the goal, forcing the 2nd overtime. Playing under the lights, camera lights were popping. Into the second overtime, found the shifty Woomer again with the ball behind the cage. Signaling to Herner, and recognizing the play, Herner breaks for the cage and a behind the back pass to Herner in the face of the Tampa Fire cagemaster, a quick stick slam dunk in the mouse hole found the Bats on top, putting the fire out on the Tampa team. The Bats wound up in the Consolation Bracket championship facing the Copperheads. Defensive battles, broken crosses, and tempers flared as Defensemen Fackler, Kiper, Killion, Meyer, and Schmitt gave the snakes all they wanted. Attacking the snake defense, Scinta, Purdie, Lott, and Leggett were not able to find the cage enough to win the bracket. The Copperheads were able to get by the Bats to win the Consolation Bracket.

Holy Bat-crosse.... The BlueGrass Bats Fall Tournament Team is now set and excited about taking our team to the Sunshine State to play during New Years at the NDP Dick's National High School Championship. Top teams from across the United Stated and Canada are booking flights, reserving hotel rooms, and practicing hard in anticipation of the arrival of the sport’s only true national championship. On January 1-3, 2010, more than 50 teams across three divisions will descend on Wesley Chapel District Park in Pasco County, Florida to fight for the right to be called the national club lacrosse champion. The field of teams will include top-ranked programs from the traditional lacrosse areas, and some exciting up-and-comers from emerging lacrosse hotbeds (thats us). Tournament organizers expect upwards of 20 American states and Canadian provinces to be represented when the final schedule is released. The Bats are proud to represent the midwest and Kentucky in this venue. “We are extremely excited about the way this tournament is shaping up in terms of the quality and diversity of the competition,” said NDP Lacrosse tournament director Kurt Dzaman. “The fact that the teams have to qualify for an invitation to play makes this event unique. It really is a true ‘tournament of champions’.”
Along with the elite competition on the field, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions offers tournament attendees the opportunity to take advantage of some exciting special events, including a free clinic given by division I coaches that cover a variety of on-the-field skill areas. The buzz has also picked-up around a new wrinkle added to the tournament this year: a coach reception and open discussion about the role of the club coach in the college recruitment process, led by Syracuse University men’s lacrosse assistant coach Lelan Rogers. “We are very proud to offer this benefit to the club coaches in attendance,” said Brian Tatum, NDP Lacrosse Director of Operations. “Club coaches can play such an important part in athletes getting noticed and recruited by college coaches. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the club coaches to get face-time with one of the truly elite college coaches. Lelan is a tremendous resource and will offer top-notch advice and guidance.”
In addition to the clinic and coaches’ reception, the Fan Zone area will offer tournament attendees with the chance to purchase the latest gear, look at tournament photos, and participate in several interactive games. “The Fan Zone this year is going to be the place to be,” said Josh Gross, PR & Sponsorship Manager for NDP Lacrosse. “This year, we’ve added a climbing wall and four-way power bungee jump that will surely cause quite a stir!”
Batline: National Fall Invitational Tournament-University of Maryland November 7th and 8th. ....
What is this??? Bats win in DC..... The Bats arrived in Edgewater, Md. to compete in the University of Maryland National Fall Invitational Tournament. With over 93 college coaches in attendance, the Bats Fall team were confident about making a good showing. The weather was surprisingly warm and sunny for a November day in Maryland. Beginning the day on Saturday, after an a 10 hour drive the past night, met some sleepy Bats facing the West Coast Starz Black team. A physical and close game, the Bats started off slow out of the gate, but quickly woke up to face the challenge. A tight game found the Bats up 4-3 with 9 minutes in the game, with two scores from Kelly, two from Connors and one by Legget. At two minutes the game was tied as the Starz increased their intensity. The game ended in a tie and forced sudden death. Defenseman Bobby Schmitt took control and was not about to give in. Fighting for a groundball he ran the length of the field, fending off slams and checks by the Black Starz. With wild eyed determination, he screamed "Fear the Bat" and rifled a shot in for the win. Bats 6 Starz Black 5
The next game found the Bats meeting a past nemesis, Maryland Fireballs. Another slow out of the gate game found the Bats trailing 5-1 at halftime. Saves by Sears prevented the score from rising higher, as the Bats seemed a bit lethargic. After a pep talk by Bat coach Purdie, the Bats began to find their form, with Connors, Purdie, and Holbrook finding the cage to bring the Bats to a 6-4 game with time ending. The final game of the day was immediately following the Fireball game. This time the Bats faced the Snappers Black team. A Snapper team with good stick skills and an aggressive goalie was not enough to defeat the Bats as the Bats went on for the second win of the day 5-2. Excellent cage work by Ryan U'Sellis and scores off excellent assists by Valenti and Herner helped find the win. Brad Lott's intensity at face-off was impressive.
Sunday found the Bats getting an early start against another West Coast Starz team, this time a Blue Team. A wet and muddy field found the Bats not ready to play. Although there were moments of brilliance, the intensity was lacking for the Bats to overcome the hard hitting faced pace game the Blue Starz brought. Goals by Woomer, Herner, and Eddy were not enough in the 13-3 loss. Not to be deterred, the next game had the Bats facing the BeLax Elite team. The Bats entered the field that was lined with college coaches from all over the nation. From the first face off the Bats were able to get into synch and stay within the game plan. The overmatched Belax team were unable to find the cage as the powerful Bat defense headed by Fackler, Schmitt, Piscitelli, Killion, U'Sellis, Sears and Kiper did not allow a score. The Bats found scores with Connors (4), Kelly (2), Herner (2), Woomer, Purdie, Karmen, and Holbrook. Strong play by Leggitt, Sims, Eddy, Lott, and Valenti added to the Belax frustration. Final score Bats 13, Belax 0.
The last game of the day was changed by the Maryland staff due to the Bats success earlier in the tournament. They pitted the Bats against a tough MadLax team. This game found the MadLax team to be quick, aggressive, and with excellent stick skills. A tired Bat team faced the Northern Virginia team with determination. With spectators lining the field and sitting on top of surrounding hills, the Bats faced one of the toughest competitions of the day. The Mad team tried to intimidate the Bats with some hard checks and body work, but little did they know that this is the way BAts play. The score went back and forth and found the Bats down 3-1 at half time. With Bat zeal and heart the Bats controlled the ball with excellent groundball fighting and determined offensive movement finding the cage to tie the score. With less than two minutes to play the score was tied 6-6. Sears in batcage fended off point blank shots, as the quick passing Mad Laxer's tried to find open shots. With one minute left the game was tied. Coordinated time outs by Coach Purdie helped set the stage for the finish. However, a quick clock brought the game, you guessed it, went into sudden death. The crowd began to chant, Bats...Bats....Bat... and you could sense the elecricity in the air. The Mad team became more aggressive and intense, only to find the defense gain control of the ball for an outlet to the Bat offense. A man up opportunity followed which found Herner in position to slam in the winning goal... Final tally BAts 7 MadLax 6 The Bats ended the Tournament with a 4-2 finish and an article in Inside Lacrosse. http://blogs.insidelacrosse.com/2009/11/09/lax-invitational-recruiting-notes

These athletes tried out and were selected to travel with the Bats this fall to the Beast of the East tournament. We are proud to call Bats: All State Attack/midfield from Lexington Lafayette Chris Kelly, Midfielder from Trinity Alex Karmen, and Trinity Attack/Midfielder Zack Eddy. These Bats have demonstrated enthusiasm for the developing their game, positive attitude, and hunger to face the toughest competition available this fall.
Congrats to former Bat Palmer Simpson playing for the Jacksonville Dolphins. Inside Lacrosse has an article on the Dolphin's team. Check it out!!!!
Congratulations to many of the Bats. Players have begun to receive letters of interest from coaches from numerous schools including Ohio State, Robert Morris, Rutgers, U. Mass, Towsen, Yale, Stevenson, and others. They are beginning to recognize the talent in Kentucky.
Bats Finish Summer Tour 2009 Bats wrap up Summer Schedule with an 11-11 record. A successful summer schedule found the Bats winning the Lax-N-nati tournament, which allows them to compete in the Dick's High School Championship in Tampa this January. The first summer session found the Bats competitive with most teams and look forward to a successful and competitive fall schedule. Not only did the athletes develop, but found that the Bats goal of also developing lasting friendships, sportsmanship and having fun were also met. Thanks to all the Bat supporters that helped us with the winning formula.

Cherry Bomb Wraps Up Bats Summer Schedule
The Bats swarmed into the resort city of Traverse City, Michigan to finish off the Summer Bat season of Lacrosse. With high hopes and confidence, the Bats found the Water Winter Wonderland extremely competitive and challenging from a number of fronts. Injuries and stomach virus plagued the Bats from the onset of the tournament. Playing on sheer determination and batgrit. After a 9 hour drive and beginning on Friday, the Bats squared off against the 1763 Chiefs. A regional Indian tribe of Laxer's from Detroit, the Chiefs edged the Bats by one, winning 6-5. The score was tied at half time 3-3, but the bats struggled winning the face-off and spent a great deal of time in the penalty box. Addison Sears had 10 saves in the game. The second game on Friday found the Bats facing the Brother Rice Black Grizzlies. An unfrendly and vocal group of "mature" hairy laxers, the Grizzlies forgot that they were playing Lacrosse rather than hockey. Although there are no such thing as "Black Grizzlies", the team was better called the Smack Gristlies. After the Bats held a 6-4 half time lead, the Gristlies came back with tactics that ended up in fistycuffs between one of our players and two of theirs. This observer has to candidly say the referees let the game get out of hand. Trey Fenwick tore his ACL and had to leave the game. Bat Bobbie Schmitt successfully declawed one of the bears. A very physical game, the Hairy Bears went on a run, finishing the game 12-7. Saturday brought the Bats back early to earn a win against a very determined but outmatched Indianapolis Team, the Indy Elite U-19. the Bats won 8-6, but again fought the penalty box. 4 goals by Connors and 2 by Scinta, with 8 saves by Slone secured the win. Next up was the Sylvania team, a team that was running through the other games with little challenge. The Bats were down 4-3 at half time in another very competitive physical game by the very "mature" Toledo team. The referees again allowed a very physical game, which the Bats, especially Bobby Schmitt were happy to oblige. After the referrees missed a blatant cross check to the head of Matt Herner, the Bats were not going to lie down. Although unable to generate any offense during the second half, the Bats were downed 7-3. Playing four games on Saturday was a challenge, but the Bats were game. The second game found the Bats playing another Detroit Team, the UD Lax team. U'Sellis in goal made 9 saves during the 7-4 loss. Down 3-2 at half time, the Bats were only able to score twice during the second half. Ground Ball Champ Fackler helped keep the game competitive. The last game of the day found the Bats going against an overmatched Grosse Point Select Team. Scoring at will, 9 Bats were able to find the cage. 3 goals by Connors and Flowers led all scores. Going into tournament play on Sunday, the Bats were eager to match up with the UD Lax team. The offense was clicking well and scoring easily in a well controlled style. At half time the score was tied 6-6. Winning 6 of the 16 face-offs by Lott, Purdie, and Valenti, the Bats were up 2 goals with 5 minutes to go. The Bats were energized and rolling high and deep. However, the Detroit team began to chant some Michigan Voodoo chant that caused the Sleeping Bear Dune to shudder, which in turn created a space warp impacting the Bats offensive and defensive Karma. End result, Bats lost by one at the buzzer.
Holy Batnews!!!! The Bats keep making news.Have you checked out VYPE magazine (at your local YMCA's, Kroger, etc.). Some elite team from Kentucky called the Bats are in this magazine.....Check it out! Also in this magazine is Batcager Addison Sears.. The Bats keep making noise.....
Read about Batcager Josh Slone in the State Journal newspaper:
Gait Cup-Gettysburg, PA July 1-4. Your BlueGrass Bats traveled to Gettysburg to play in the elite Gait Cup Tournament. The Bats finished the tournament with a 3-4 Record, after facing some of the toughest teams in the nation. Working through what many considered the toughest pool in the elite division, the Bats recognized the level of play needed to be competitive. Beginning with a win against the Colorado Team Mile High the day of arrival, the Bats then moved on to play the Green Turtle Fells. A seasoned and talented Fells team had little difficulty beating the Bats in Gettysburg Stadium. The next match up found the Bats meeting one of the best teams in the elite division, a team from San Francisco, California, the Alcatrez Outlaws. The second game of the day, found this quick and physical team too much for the Bats. Ending Thursday's competition, the Bats matched up with the Possums U-19 team. A very competitive game, found the Bats committing too many unforced errors to win this closely matched game. Friday, began the day with the Bats meeting the Edge USA Redshirt K team from Long Island. Physically, the Edge were much larger and stronger, however, the Bats were more physical against this team forcing the edge into many errors. A close game to the finish, however found the Edge winning by an edge. The Bats won the next game against in state rival Stickhead. Jumping to a huge lead early, the Bats then throttled down to finish the game with a solid victory.
Finally, the Bats ended their Gait Cup appearance facing the Maryland Fireballs. This game was also played in the Stadium and found the Bats outscoring this Maryland team to wrap up a solid performance on Friday. The Bats demonstrated that they can compete with other elite teams from around the nation and were able to showcase their skills to numerous college coaches in attendance. All of the Bats demonstrated the determination and heart that is needed to play at the highest level. Pictures can be found at the Bluegrass Bats Blogspot (see links section for link). The Bats resume training for their next venue in Traverse City.... Fear the Bat!
The Bats completed a double header on Saturday June 27th against the D1 Destroyers this weekend. A feisty bunch of Tennessee laxers, came in for their first game of the summer. They were a well schooled team that were looking to see how they would match up with the Bats. A proud bunch of Destroyer parents followed the to Bats field. Although they didn't match up well with the Bats today, they demonstrated heart, stamina, and determination. The bats were able to outgun them during this double header. A hamburger, hot dog, and bat meat cookout followed the two Bat games, which allowed for getting to know each other. The Destroyer group were indeed a pleasure to host. The sure to be tired Destroyers completed their tour of Louisville with a win over the Derby City Saints in overtime 8-7. Thanks to all who helped with this festivity.
Thrilling is the only way to describe this weekend. An exciting and action packed weekend found your BlueGrass Bats taking the Lax-N-Ati championship in Cincinnati this weekend. The Bats now have qualified to play in the National Tournament of Champions in Tampa Florida (Wesley Chapel Park) January 1-3, 2010. On a hot and steamy Saturday morning the Bats took the field to begin competition at Lax-N-ati. Although the Bats were down 8 men from their roster, coaches Purdie, Johnson, and Schroeder went into competition confident. Facing the Cincinnati Riot they took a commanding lead and then relaxed to a 10-9 victory. Led by Connors with 4 goals on 12 shots, five other Bats found the cage (Edelin, Senn, Holbrook, Brenzel, and Purdie). Fackler and Herner led in ground Balls with 3 apiece. Batcagers Sears and Slone combined for 7 saves. Bat Lesson #1, "fear the Bat." The second game found the Bats giving up a squeeker to a Louisville Team 5-4. Difficulty handling the face-offs and clearing the ball found the overconfident Bats unable to come up with the tying goal. Goals by Purdie, Holbrook, Herner, and connors were not enough. With the temperature in the mid 90's and the humidity close to rain, the Bats met the soon to be #1 seed Team Velocity. Initially scoring at will, the Bats took a solid lead early but failed to keep it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEmrjSP-kjw Four (4) goals by Connors and 1 by Purdie was not enough in this 6-5 loss. Batcager Hymes made 5 saves in the 2nd half, but face off difficulties 5 out of 11 again were present. Schmitt and Fackler led in Ground ball victories with 3 apiece. Wrapping up Saturdays event, found the Bats against the Indy Elite. A big and powerful team, the Elite came out physical. The Bats were able to score with great assists and defense getting the ball back. An emotional elite coach was ejected forcing the Bats, in good sportsmanlike fashion, to provide a coach to the elite to continue the game. The Bats prevailed 8-7. Connors, Herner, Senn each found the cage twice. Edelin and Lott also found the cage. Lott was also ground ball champ with 4 followed by Woomer's 3.
Sunday began tournament play, with the Bats coming in 2-2. this found them seeded 3rd, and set to play the 2nd seed team. A win would propel them into the Championship with #1 Seed Velocity. A confident Bat contingent and team faced off against the Orange Louisville team. Play was action packed and adrenalin was pumping. All players knew that it was all or nothing. After being out hustled the first game, the Bats turned it up a notch. Following the game-plan the Bats fought through a chippy group of competitors. Flags began to fly as the referees struggled to keep control of the game. An angry rival parent on the sideline began screaming obscenties forcing little children to cover their ears. The game went into 2 overtimes, propelled by excellent defense by Piscitelli, Fackler, Killion, Schmitt, and Sears. Bat scores by Herner, Purdie, and Connors sent the pesty Orange group packing. Bat lesson #2, the Good guys always win in the end. With the temperature at 98.6, the Bats were set to face the #1 seed from Cincinnati, Ohio. Mostly seniors, the Velocity team was quite formidable. Games were 30 minute running clock, forcing the teams to be in sprint mode most of the time. Led by Sam Woomer (2 goals) and Sears (9 saves), the Bats scored 3 times on 10 shots. Up 1 goal with less then 2 minutes to go, fans were biting their finger and toenails. They had lost earlier games in the last couple of minutes and were afraid that fate would deal another cruel blow. Coaches had the plan drawn up and recharged the Bats with the "BAT WING". They knew that the Bats had to control the ball. All day int he thick grass the ball was difficult to manage. The referees switched balls to help with control. Batcager Sears, playing out of his Bat mind, kept the team focussed and with only 1 failed clear in the game remained calm and confident. Finding open men and making cross field passes, caused fans to tremble and wonder what was happening. A cross field pass by Schmitt allowed the clock to expire, propelling the Bats to win the Lax-N-ati tournament. This is the first time a Ky. team has won this tournament. Bat Lesson #3: It's not healthy to make a Bat mad. An exciting weekend of Bat's Lacrosse found behind the back assists, behind the back scores, transition offense, and physical defense that entertained the fans. People in Gotham Cincinnati now know what it means to "Look it....fear the BAT." Fans are directed to Youtube for Bats v. Velocity (1st game) and the blog for photos. Next stop Destroyers in Louisville.

The Bats will host the D1 Destroyers from Nashville, Tennessee on June 27th beginning around 12:00 noon. We will play two games, with the Minor League Bat team playing at 5:30 that day. We will host the Destroyers, a select team from the Nashville area. They feature many of the up and coming players from JPII, and Centennial High schools that are Division II in Tennessee as well as Brentwood and Franklin, Div. 1 teams. They also have a few select players from other programs that have played on travel teams in the past, from Ensworth and Father Ryan, along with a couple of rising Freshman, that are`proven players and ready to take on the next level. This will be a great tune up game after Lax-N-ati and before our trek to Gettysburg. Our social directors will consider a Bat cookout after the game for the visiting Destroyers. The D1 |Destroyers are excited about meeting and competing against the BATS.

The Bats went into action playing the college team 502 Flow. Manned by college players from the University of Kentucky, Georgia, Arizona State, Louisville, Mount St. Joseph, and Bellarmine, the Bats made a come from behind win, taking the flow out of Flow 502 late in the game 7-6. Team 502 came out confident that they could clip the Bat's wings, and jumped to a 6-3 lead. The crowd was into the game, with parents and the Bat middle school team watching the flurry of activity. Team 502 tried sneaky tactics with attackman Colin Fackler (UK) looking to score. Mike Duffy (ASU), Taylor Samuel (MSJ), and Neil Barnes (MSJ) found dodging and scoring difficult as the Bat defense prevailed. Blake Herner (MSJ, UK) was able to deflect numerous bat shots, but couldn't hold ground as the Bats were able to score against the 502. Sears, U'Sellis, and Slone were instrumental in the batcage. With two minutes left, team 502 had the ball trying to tie up the game, but a wild shot by Barnes ended the game with the Bats victorious. Bats 7 502 6.

Bat Tryouts a huge success!!!!!!!!
What began as a somewhat dreary morning, quickly shaped up to be a tremendous day for Lacrosse. As the Bat Field Staff were putting the finishing touches on Bat stadium, athletes eager to earn Bat wings arrived hours early to the field. Laxers from far away locations arrived to test their mettle against other warriors. Athletes came from training centers in areas East called Lexington Catholic and Lafayette. They came from the north, from camps called Kentucky Country Day and Oldham. Western warriors came from camps called Male, Manual, and St. Francis. Central areas were represented by laxers from training centers called Eastern, Christian Academy, St. Xavier, and Trinity. The word was out and laxers were eager, so eager two brave athletes not yet in high school arrived for battle, and played so gallantly that other players were awed at their talents. In all 11 well coached high schools were represented, all came prepared, all determined. As they entered Bat Stadium, they looked at the field bat and nodded in respect, and prepared for competition. An enthusiastic crowd watched in what was almost a carnival atmosphere. Music was blaring and adrenaline was pumping.
The players took the field, 59 in all. Many proven by state championship rings, others All State titles, but all ready to vie for the coveted Bat Wings. Seasoned coaches rated players, finding it difficult to lower the number to 25, as the talent was considered elite by our camp. Players ran, dodged, faked, shot, poked, checked, and lifted, and encouraged one another. After 3 hours of structured, practically non stop evaluation, the tryout came to a close. Discussions of making two teams was considered due to the overwhelming enthusiasm. But it was not to be this year. Other teams will emerge, alas this year not everyone can be a bat.
With new found respect for one another, all the athletes came together in Lacrosse fellowship. The evaluators struggled for hours to come up with names for the 2009 summer Bat roster. Struggle as they did ,27 athletes were named with 8 alternates. The athletes were asked whether they were willing to accept the challenge to fly into BAT-L with the Bats. So far all but a couple have responded with a resounding "YOU BET I AM!" Congratulations and good luck Bat Warriors. This years Bats reflect athletes from 6 different schools and 13 are returning Bats. Fear the BAT! (pictures of tryouts will be posted in media section)
Think you are tough enough to wear batwings? Take advantage of Master Arshik Hartoonian's conditioning program (see website and details in links section). He has a terrific program to get you tougher, stronger, faster, more flexible, and cuter........Get in supreme condition for competition.
A lot of excitement and enthusiasm was noted at the Bat meeting at our Bat Cave. Great ideas emerged regarding fund raising and showcasing our skills. We had a great turn out even though it was a very rainy day after Thunder. The Pizza was great, and Todd (0wner of Brandon's) is developing a Bat Pizza (if you have ever been curious about what Italian Bat meat tastes like). Master Instructor Arshik Hartoonian presented on his conditioning program as well. He is willing to donate 10% of sign up fee to the bat fund. Another member of the growing Bat Colony. Our first Vampire Bat Club member is Mr. Tim Wesley for his generous donation to the program.
The Bat General Manager's securing needed equipment for the Bluegrass Bats. Just finished seeding and fertilizing Bat Field.
Thanks to Phil Fackler, Austin Fackler, Dave Purdie, Matt Herner and Wayne Herner for the hard work prepping Bat's Field on Saturday. The field is seeded, fertilized, outlined, and ready to be lined in about 3 weeks. Also thanks to Gerald Hueke of Action Landscape for providing equipment and consultation for our field.
The Bats are officially recognized as having tax-exempt status 501 (c) 3 and we will be initiating fund raising strategies to help defray costs for our travel, tournament fees, equipment, etc. We have 4-5 fund raising strategies beginning. We are issuing Kroger Gift Cards and Thornton Fundworks Cards to Bat families and friends to help generate funds. An e-mail will be coming from Tracey Guerra regarding obtaining the cards. We will earn 4% of sales from Kroger and 2% for gas and 6% for inside sales from Thorntons. Please get your card(s) soon. We also have 3 other strategies that we will be contacting folks about soon.

Recruiting Process
The recruiting process is just that…..a process. There are several important steps to being recruited by college coaches. The most common questions asked by prospects and parents usually involve "when" certain steps should occur. Listed below are descriptions of several key steps in the recruiting process and the time frame in which they should occur. Research School
Prospects should research schools and their lacrosse programs prior to their junior season. Develop a list of schools that you may be interested in attending. Some valuable resources for quick information and links to all Division I, II, and III lacrosse programs include www.lax.com and www.laxpower.com. Check the Bluegrass Bats link section for specific links to schools. For more extensive research, visit www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/cohome.htm, click on advanced search, then varsity sports. Extensive information on schools, lacrosse programs, academic requirements, and scholarship can be found by using this tool. (February/March) Letter of Introduction
Early in a prospect’s junior season, prospects should compose a personal letter to introduce themselves to the coaching staffs at the schools they may be interested in. In addition to the letter, take time to develop an athletic resume. Athletic resumes should include vital athletic information, including all sports, honors and statistics. Lastly, include a copy of your spring lacrosse schedule. Keep in mind, college coaching staffs are in the midst of their own seasons, so response may not be immediate. However, the letter of introduction will allow coaching staffs the opportunity to start a file on the prospect. Personalize your letters to the specific schools you are sending a letter to and do not be afraid to e-mail these items. Ask coaches what summer camps they will be attending so that you can try to attend a camp that will allow them to see you play. As a junior, coaches can correspond with you via mail and e-mail or can watch you play. However, coaches are unable to place recruiting calls or talk with you face to face. (Late March/April)Camp Schedule
When you have settled your own schedule for summer leagues and summer camps, send a follow-up letter and camp schedule to coaches. Your follow-up letter can update coaching staffs on how you are doing or how you did in your junior season and the camp schedule will let them know where and when they can see you over the summer. (Late spring) Game Film
At some point during your junior season have your coaching staff or parents develop a game film. For best results, tape several or all of your games. Since many coaches may not be able to travel to see you play in person, quality game film becomes a vital tool in the recruiting process. It is suggested that you send film of you at your best against the best competition. Coaches may not be able to accurately evaluate you if they perceive the level of competition as being very weak. Do not send a highlight film. Coaches prefer a full game or extended portions of games because they realize a highlight film does not allow accurate evaluations. You can add a highlight section to a full game film for added exposure. Be prepared, most coaches prefer to keep game film to view and review, so make copies as needed. Coaches will probably not be looking for game film before August or September. (Spring/summer) NCAA Clearinghouse
As a prospective student-athlete at a Division I or II institution, you have certain responsibilities to attend to before you may participate in athletics. The NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse, located in Iowa City, Iowa, is the organization that handles ALL inquiries regarding an individual's initial eligibility status. The Clearinghouse operates a separate Web site at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net which maintains and processes all of the initial-eligibility certifications. To register for the NCAA Clearinghouse, fill out the online form at the Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse Web Site or call the NCAA publications hotline at 800/638-3731 and ask for a free copy of the "Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete" which contains the registration forms and a Clearinghouse brochure. (End of junior year). Contact Period
A college coach may contact you in person off the college campus only on or after July 1 after completion of your junior year. Unofficial Visits An unofficial visit is when a prospect or prospects family visits a college campus at their own expense. Prospects can take tours, undergo admissions interviews, and even meet with the lacrosse coaching staff or team members. Unlimited unofficial visits are permitted by the NCAA. (Spring of junior year, summer/fall of senior year) Official Visits An official campus visit can be arranged through coaching staffs. Prospects are permitted five official visits total at DI and DII schools. An official visit occurs when any or all of the following occur: A prospect’s transportation, meals, lodging or entertainment is paid for by the coaching staff within the permitted limits. Note that different programs handle an official visit differently. Not all programs have the resources to pay for all of the items listed above, but that does not mean a coach is not interested. Individual prospects may have to absorb some of the cost of an official visit. For more detailed information on contacts, unofficial, and official visits, visit www.ncaa.org. (Fall/winter of senior year)
Application and AdmissionApplying and gaining acceptance to schools are up to the individual prospects. Always inform the coaching staff that you are applying or have applied to their school. This allows coaches to identify you as a lacrosse prospect to their admissions department. In addition, some lacrosse programs are allotted application fee waivers by their admissions department. This waives the cost of applying for top recruits or desired prospects that may be undecided on applying. Do not hesitate to inquire with a coach about the availability of fee waivers. If a coach does not oblige, it may be that his admissions department does not offer them or they restrict them. (Dates vary from school to school
