The BlueGrass Bats became a reality at a Waffle House in Middletown, Kentucky during the fall of 2008. Wayne Herner and Phil Fackler had decided to push forward with this endeavor shortly after the 2007 Gait Cup. Bellarmine's D-I head coach Jack McGetrick mentioned to some of the parents during the Gait Cup that if Kentucky wanted to develop a nationally competitive Lacrosse team, athletes would have to travel and play more competitive teams. So, Phil, Wayne and Dave Purdie met to discuss the feasibility of developing a travel team of Lacrosse Athletes from Kentucky. With the intention of developing better athletes, increasing friendships, and accommodating the desire to play lacrosse throughout the school year, the club came to fruition shortly afterward. With enthusiastic interest from athletes and the support of parents, the first Bats came together in October. Most of the country is now becoming aware that Kentucky has competitive lacrosse and this team has developed to continue to make that statement. The Bats are here to prove we can compete with the best teams! We were fortunate that Coach Purdie and Coach Kevin Johnson got the Bats off the ground. Beginning our second season, Coach Pete Schroeder will step up as head coach and will continue with Coach Johnson and a staff of coaches to continue the Bat tradition in Kentucky.
